Window Treatments For Arch Windows

Today a reader asks:

“I love the shape of my arched windows but I hate how much heat they
let in during the summer, what are the best window treatments for arch windows?”

Typically you have four options for window treatments for arched windows. Selecting the best one will largely depend on your particular style and budged. Listed below from least to most expensive are the common choices for window treatments for arch windows.

1.) Temporary paper shade: These window treatments run around $30 and are great if you don’t need any control on how much light is let in. They are paper and the most common shade offers only light filtering protection. But if you only want the window covered during the hot months, and generally you take it down in the winter to let more light in, they are an inexpensive alternative to purchasing custom made window treatments. Casual look and cost under $30.

2.) Aluminum blinds: Available in a broad array of colors and textures, these blinds give you the most control. Keep the slats tilted all the way closed or open them to adjust the light. These blinds are perfect if you want the most amount of control. Some companies may offer remote control options to tilt your blind open and closed. Which is great for windows that are high up with no access. Casual, contemporary and will run you about $65-$175 average asking price.

3.) Cellular or honeycomb blinds: Available in a wide range of colors and fabrics, these shades are best on areas you want maximum control. Like regular cellular shades you can choose how much light blocking you need. Available in sheers to complete blackout. Which is perfect for day sleepers. Like the temporary shades, these blinds are fixed and can not be opened and closed. From contemporary to formal at $100-$300 average price One more feature to be aware of on cellular shades. If you have a window below your arch and there is no separation between the two (i.e. nothing to mount the shade onto) you might want to look into getting the same cellular shade for down below. Depending on the width you need, some companies like Bali, make a headrail that accommodates the lower shade as well as the arch. Thus solving your dilemma of how to mount your new arched shade.

4.) Wood or Faux wood shutters: Wood shutters are available in many white and off white shades as well as other painted and stained colors, varying from company to company. Faux wood shutters are typically only available in white and off white shades. Shutters on arches are typically built in and cannot be opened and closed. But the slats themselves can be tilted opened and closed much like the aluminum blinds to control the amount of light you let in. Casual to formal look at $350 and up.

Tip: if you are special ordering a window treatment for your arched window, make sure the color and style is exactly what you want before ordering. Most companies will not allow returns on custom merchandise. Just be aware. And as always, shop around, prices do vary. Also be sure to do some research by shopping around before buying your window treatments.
