Today Alan asks:
“Is there a big difference in price between regular blinds and plantation interior shutters? My Realtor said that plantation shutters add value to your home, but I’m afraid they may be awful expensive in the long run.”
Yes Alan, there is a big difference in price between regular blinds and shutters. Now there are actually a few types of shades that give shutters a run for there money in the price category however, but these shades are typically fabric and usually come from Hunter Douglas. So if you’re looking at anything else, you’ll probably see a big jump in the price category.
Typically installed shutters run between $20 – $30 bucks a square foot. Figuring out SF on your window is a little complicated, but I’ll walk you through it. It’s a simple equation. Width x Length = Y, Y/144 = total SF (Y = total square inches of your window). To make it easier to understand let’s say your window is 58″ wide by 48″ high. You multiply 58 x 48. Which equals 2784. Now divide that number by 144 (because 2784 is square inches, we need need to divide by 144 to get square feet) and you’ll end up with 19.34SF. If we use the high end of the shutter scale and multiply 19.34sf x $30sf we get $580.20 per window of that size. If you were looking at wood blinds, the price would be about half or less, depending on the company and type of wood.
