Installing Tile – Tile Installation Tools

Today, Anonymous writes in:

Flooring Diva,

I read your article about bathroom tile installation, yet I am not sure if I need to buy all the needed tools or if some of them can simply be rented? Please help!

Depending on what is needed for the project itself, you can rent most of the following from popular home improvement stores:

  • a tile cutter (tile scorer)
  • a bullnose machine
  • a tile saw

Other things like spacers, a hand-held tile breaker, along with the one time use supplies, are best to just purchase outright. With this said, there is no reason why you could not simply shop around for the lowest purchase price. Because in some cases, with bigger jobs, own can be more cost effective than renting.

As with any tool, think safety! That means eye protection, remembering that when using a wet saw, tile will be slick. That means watching those fingers.

Bonus tip: When going to rent a wet saw or other electric equipment, it never hurts to ask the renting agency if they provide classes or even just a quick run though on how to use the equipment itself. If you find yourself in the middle of a sales pitch for them to do the install for you, just explain that your spouse will be doing most of the work, but you are interested in helping behind the scenes, yet fear looking foolish by asking how to use some of the equipment. It works almost every time.

Do you have questions about the selecting or the installation of: tile, carpet or wall treatments (window blinds, etc)? Then email me your tale of woe and perhaps I will be able to answer your questions right here at the Flooring Diva Blog!
