Pet Safe Wood Floors?

No more pet mistakes, Dog Training And Behavior help

    Today Malcolm asks:

I have a dog who makes mistakes on the floor when left inside. What kind of wood flooring is safe for this sort of thing?

Wood flooring is not a good idea if you have a pet that makes a lot of mistakes on the floor. First of all there, really isn’t anything you can do to seal the wood so that the urine doesn’t seep down to your subfloor. And any products that offer to do this for you, will most certainly void your warranty. And can harm the color and finish of your flooring. In cases of engineered wood floor, it could possibly cause delamination of the wood layers.

You love your pet, but you want wood flooring as well? You have two choices, unless you want to throw away a lot of money on new floors every year or so.

    • Put wood floors in the areas of your home your pet does not go in.
    • Get something less expensive that can handle a little more of a beating like vinyl. You can even get a vinyl floor that looks wood. Then you get the best of both worlds. You have a floor with the appearance you like, yet your pet isn’t stuck to one section of the house, and you don’t have to spend money on new wood flooring every year because of urine damage.

Do you have questions about the selecting or the installation of: tile, carpet or wall treatments (blinds, etc)? Then email me your tale of woe and perhaps I will be able to answer your questions right here at the Flooring Diva Blog!
